TYPES OF T SHIRT PRINTING

There are many different styles of t shirt printing to name a few are ,

Cad Cut Heat applied vinyl:
T shirt printing

This style of printing has a sharp look and is great for sports gear and printing football numbers and simple shaped logos , you can also print multi colour images too thanks to some of the new roland print and cut systems  not also forgetting mimaki make some great print and cut printers, I will post up another blog on the uses of print and cut soon. Vinyl works on light, dark and colour t shirts and is commonly used to create personalised names and numbers on sports clothing and running vests , it is cheaper to produce than screen printing as there are no screen setup costs as screens are not needed for this process , this process is also great if you are doing one off t shirt printing.
if you are doing one off t shirts , colours are restricted to standard vinyl colours unless you are using digital printable vinyl that is used on the roland print and cut machines
Another great thing about T shirt printing with vinyl is that it also comes in many exotic and metallic colours too like silver, metallic, sparkle and more, Standard t shirt vinyl cannot be used for photos.

T SHIRT PRINTING USING HEAT TRANSFERS

Heat Transfers :
Heat transfers are also great for smaller runs and one off t shirt printing , you can use heat transfers to print photos and high detail images onto t shirts , The process used to be known as as iron on transfers where a you would print your image on a home inkjet printer in mirror image and then iron it onto the t shirt The disadvantage of the earlier type heat transfers was a tough feel and they were not very durable. However, Things have evolved since then and the home iron on heat transfers days have improved.

Today most top print shops like east london printers ( excuse the plug )  are now using laser printed heat transfers, which produce a nice soft feel and are also 40 degree washable.
They can also be  Printed on a large format machine onto digital vinyl, The advantage of using laser printers and wide format printers for t shirt printing is it produces a much softer feel, which is  comparable to water based screen printing inks.

T shirt printing using digital heat transfers are a great choice for someone doing a small run of t shirts , ie: a day out, stag and hen night, charity events and so on. Heat Transfers are generally not as durable as silk screen printing or Cad cut vinyl but they are 40degree washable and will last a fair amount of time.
The vinyl ones are the most durable and do not fade over time.

T SHIRT PRINTING USING SCREEN PRINTING

This is the most popular method and also the most durable. This method of t shirt printing goes back to around 1910 and has evolved allot since then.

Silk screen printing is ideal for bigger print runs as the cost per print is cheaper than heat transfers or vinyl , However when it comes to t shirt printing with silk screen printing you have to take the screen setup costs into consideration as each colour in your design will need to have a screen made and would result in another setup charge ie: if a printer charged £20 to set up a screen and you had 4 colours in your design, The initial setup cost would be £80, Then you would have the price of the t shirt and then the price per print. On that subject with silk screen printing , after getting the initial setup cost out f the way the cost per print is generally much cheaper than heat transfers and vinyl. Baring in mind that most printers have a minimum of at least 20 pieces when it comes to screen printing.

T shirt printing example video here is a video of someone making a screen for t shirt printing screen printing , it is cheaper for bulk runs but a one off silk screen printed t shirt would be much more expensive than the other methods as there is allot of expense involved setting up your initial screen making it not such an economical choice for a one off t shirt. if you are doing a run of 100 t shirts I would highly recommend it.
